VERIFIED FACT

T. rex lived closer in time to humans than to Stegosaurus.

Why this sounds fake

Most people imagine famous dinosaurs sharing one giant prehistoric era, instead of living tens of millions of years apart.

Dinosaur time gets flattened in our heads, so we picture famous dinosaurs sharing one prehistoric stage. They did not. Stegosaurus lived in the Jurassic. T. rex lived near the end of the Cretaceous, tens of millions of years later. Humans are still separated from T. rex by an enormous gap, but the gap from T. rex to us is smaller than the gap from T. rex back to Stegosaurus. That is why the fact works instantly: it rearranges the dinosaur timeline, not the dinosaur names. The famous dinosaurs were not neighbors.

The Surprise

T. rex lived closer in time to us than to Stegosaurus.

Timeline showing Stegosaurus around 150 million years ago, T. rex around 66 million years ago, and the present day. The bracket from Stegosaurus to T. rex spans about 84 million years; T. rex to today spans about 66 million years.
Stegosaurus to T. rex: ~84M years. T. rex to us: ~66M years.
